Why defence is different
Defence Microsoft cloud is not a tenancy with a security overlay. It is a tightly controlled environment shaped by classification level, by the clearance chain, and by the operational reality that the people using it may be deployed, at sea, on a base, or partnering with allied forces. The work is judged not on features but on whether it can be accredited — and accreditation lives or dies on evidence.
The constraints are unlike any commercial estate. The data carries a classification that dictates where it can live and who can touch it; the engineers who build the estate may themselves need to be cleared to SC or DV; and the user at the far end might be on a ship with a narrow satellite link rather than a desk with fibre. A pattern that is trivial in an enterprise — guest access, a quick integration, an offshore support desk — can be a non-starter here.
We design for that constraint, not around it. Delivery is scoped to the sensitivity of the work, staffed by cleared UK-based engineers where the programme requires it, and evidenced against the accreditor's requirements from the first workshop — so the controls are provable before go-live, not reconstructed afterwards.
